B. Braun SSI Pathway

This virtual reality training application showcases B. Braun products and procedures meant to prevent surgical site infections (SSI). The action takes place inside a virtual hospital where the layout and spatial logic mirrors that of an actual surgical wing. Trainees choose between different stations, navigates various paths and embodies characters (surgeon, nurse, and sterile nurse) whose actions play a role in the prevention of SSIs.

1

Interaction concept

Interaction within the VR environment is specific to each task and ranges from multiple choice questions to sequences of interactive steps that require using instruments in the correct order and/or for the right amount of time.

2

The role of characters

Trainees “jump” into different characters to play their roles. This helps them understand the risks for surgical site infections from the perspective of each member of the surgical team.

3

A complex environment

The complexity of the spatial environment in a surgical wing plays a big role in the challenges posed by effectively preventing SSIs. As opposed to traditional training methods, this application immerses trainees into an interactive, life-like situation.

4

Embodied cognition

Our bodies are extremely capable of dealing with the complexity and messiness of real environments. We naturally orient ourselves towards the most relevant objects as we pursue our goals. Sometimes, this know-how cannot be abstracted through diagrams or text. That is why training simulations that replicate key aspects of an environment can be critical for efficient learning.
